Metal in Kellogg?s Mini-Wheats Prompts Huge Recall

Boxes of Kellogg's Frosted Mini Wheats may contain pieces of flexible metal mesh, the company said, in announcing a recall through the Food and Drug Administration. About 2.8 million boxes of Frosted Mini-Wheats, Bite-Size Original Mini-Wheats, and Frosted Bite-Size Mini-Wheats cereal are subject to the recall, the Wall Street Journal noted.

What's to blame for possible metal mesh in the cereal? A faulty manufacturing part, according to Kellogg's. The Wall Street Journal said Kellogg's issued a cereal recall two years ago, also blamed on problems in the supply chain. In that case, packaging errors led to problems with cereal odor and color.

WebProNews logged onto the Kellogg's message boards, reporting customers are fed up with this latest recall. The toll-free number Kellogg's provided is apparently overwhelmed with calls, frustrating cereal buyers in search of recall details.

Were Your Mini-Wheats Recalled?

If the Mini-Wheats in your pantry were recalled, they will have the letters KB, AP or FK before or after the "Best if Used Before" date.

For Frosted Mini-Wheats Bite-Size Original cereal, there are seven Universal Product Codes to look out for: 3800031829; 3800073444; 3800031834; 3800046954; 3800031921; 3800004961; and 3800021993. The last two UPC codes on the list pertain to single serving size containers.

Recalled Unfrosted Bite-Size Mini-Wheats bear the UPC 3800021983 or. 3800035982.

Yikes! Metal in My Cereal?

Kellogg's said no injuries have been reported so far, according to Market Watch. The company also says the risk of injury is low.

On the Kellogg's website, the company says it sought advice from David Acheson, M.D., an internal medicine physician and former Chief Medical Officer at the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition,. Acheson reportedly told Kellogg's it's unlikely the metal fragments will make their way into the cereal. Even if they do, Acheson says the risk of injury is low.

Pfft! I Want My Money Back

Kellogg's will replace recalled cereal on customer request. To make that request, wait for the phone lines to clear and call the company at 800-962-1413, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern.

Recall Sparks Fear

Customers posted questions on the Kellogg's site, several from concerned buyers whose family members had consumed cereal before learning it was recalled.

A grandmother named Trudy chastised the company for not giving out more information about possible signs of illness and what to do upon detecting them.

One customer said she unknowingly fed the potentially tainted cereal to a child with a serious medical condition. A poster named Teresa asked if this cereal might be the cause of salmonella poisoning, saying the only one of her four children to eat the cereal was hospitalized with a salmonella infection recently.

A daycare provider reported serving the cereal to two children as well as herself and asked whether medical follow-up is necessary.

A Kellogg's employee answered but one question on the list pertaining to the UPC codes of recalled product.
